Article: OPTIMUM FARM PLAN UNDER LIMITED RESOURCE CONDITIONS: A MICROLEVEL STUDY IN IMO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT
This study analyzed resources allocation pattern for 175 smallholder food
crop farmers in Imo State, Nigeria and attempts to develop optimum
combination of food crop enterprises, considering available resources and
existing management practices. Liner programming technique was used for
optimizing resources. Multi-state stratified random sampling was used in
selecting respondents to obtain the data required to formulate farm plans
for a food crop farmer in the survey area during the 2013 cropping season.
Data were collected using the cost-route approach. Results showed that the
food crop enterprises that contributed immensely to the farmers net
income were cassava and yam with total net farm income per annum of
N130632 and N119159 respectively. The profit lines of cassava and yam
from liner programming analysis were 4.7 and 4.2 respectively indicating a
divergence between the existing and optimum farm plans for cassava and
yam under limited resource constraints. Farm resources were not
optimally allocated and after optimization, farm income could be increased.
Overall, cassava and yam based cropping patterns showed dominance in
both the existing and optimum plans. It is recommended that effective farm
advisory services that will educate farmers on the efficient allocation of
their resources be encouraged.
Keywords: Optimum, farm plan, limited resources, micro level,
